NICMOS and VLBA observations of the gravitational lens system B1933+503
NICMOS observations of the complex gravitational lens system B1933+503 reveal
infrared counterparts to two of the inverted spectrum radio images. The
infrared images have arc-like structures. The corresponding radio images are
also detected in a VLBA map made at 1.7 GHz with a resolution of 6 mas. We fail
to detect two of the four inverted radio spectrum components with the VLBA even
though they are clearly visible in a MERLIN map at the same frequency at a
different epoch. The absence of these two components could be due to rapid
variability on a time-scale less than the time delay, or to broadening of the
images during propagation of the radio waves through the ISM of the lensing
galaxy to an extent that they fall below the surface brightness detectability
threshold of the VLBA observations. The failure to detect the same two images
with NICMOS is probably due to extinction in the ISM of the lensing galaxy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRA

Growth to early adulthood following extremely preterm birth: the EPICure study.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate growth trajectories from age 2.5 to 19 years in individuals born before 26 weeks of gestation (extremely preterm; EP) compared with term-born controls. METHODS: Multilevel modelling of growth data from the EPICure study, a prospective 1995 birth cohort of 315 EP participants born in the UK and Ireland and 160 term-born controls recruited at school age. Height, weight, head circumference and body mass index (BMI) z-scores were derived from UK standards at ages 2.5, 6, 11 and 19 years. RESULTS: 129 (42%) EP children were assessed at 19 years. EP individuals were on average 4.0 cm shorter and 6.8 kg lighter with a 1.5 cm smaller head circumference relative to controls at 19 years. Relative to controls, EP participants grew faster in weight by 0.06 SD per year (95% CI 0.05 to 0.07), in head circumference by 0.04 SD (95% CI 0.03 to 0.05), but with no catch-up in height. For the EP group, because of weight catch-up between 6 and 19 years, BMI was significantly elevated at 19 years to +0.32 SD; 23.4% had BMI >25 kg/m2 and 6.3% >30 kg/m2 but these proportions were similar to those in control subjects. EP and control participants showed similar pubertal development in early adolescence, which was not associated with height at 19 years in either study group. Growth through childhood was related to birth characteristics and to neonatal feeding practices. CONCLUSIONS: EP participants remained shorter and lighter and had smaller head circumferences than reference data or controls in adulthood but had elevated BMI

Does angiotensin-1 converting enzyme genotype influence motor or cognitive development after pre-term birth?
BACKGROUND: Raised activity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may both amplify inflammatory and free radical responses and decrease tissue metabolic efficiency and thus enhance cerebral injury in the preterm infant. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) DD genotype is associated with raised ACE and RAS activity as well as potentially adverse stimuli such as inflammation. The DD genotype has been associated with neurological impairments in the elderly, and thus may be also associated with poorer motor or cognitive development amongst children born preterm prematurely. METHODS: The association of DD genotype with developmental progress amongst 176 Caucasian children born at less than 33 weeks gestation (median birthweight 1475 g, range 645–2480 g; gestation 30 weeks, range 22–32; 108 male) was examined at 2 and 5 1/2 years of age. Measured neuro-cognitive outcomes were cranial ultrasound abnormalities, cerebral palsy, disability, Griffiths Developmental Quotient [DQ] at 2 yrs, and General Cognitive Ability [British Ability Scales-11] and motor performance [ABC Movement], both performed at 5 1/2 yrs. All outcomes were correlated with ACE genotype. RESULTS: The DD genotype was not associated with lower developmental quotients even after accounting for important social variables. CONCLUSION: These data do not support either a role for ACE in the development of cognitive or motor function in surviving infants born preterm or inhibition of ACE as a neuroprotective therapy
Parental experience of interaction with healthcare professionals during their infant's stay in the neonatal intensive care unit.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences of parents of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit towards interaction with healthcare professionals during their infants critical care. DESIGN: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents of critically ill infants admitted to neonatal intensive care and prospectively enrolled in a study of communication in critical care decision making. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and uploaded into NVivo V.10 to manage and facilitate data analysis. Thematic analysis identified themes representing the data. RESULTS: Nineteen interviews conducted with 14 families identified 4 themes: (1) initial impact of admission affecting transition into the neonatal unit; (2) impact of consistency of care, care givers and information giving; (3) impact of communication in facilitating or hindering parental autonomy, trust, parental expectations and interactions; (4) parental perception of respect and humane touches on the neonatal unit. CONCLUSION: Factors including the context of infant admission, interprofessional consistency, humane touches of staff and the transition into the culture of the neonatal unit are important issues for parents. These issues warrant further investigation to facilitate individualised family needs, attachment between parents and their baby and the professional team
The Físchlár digital video system: a digital library of broadcast TV programmes
Físchlár is a system for recording, indexing, browsing and playback of broadcast TV programmes which has been operational on our University campus for almost 18 months. In this paper we give a brief overview of how the system operates, how TV programmes are organised for browse/playback and a short report on the system usage by over 900 users in our University
Refining regional organization of services in the UK to improve outcomes of pregnancies delivering at extremely low gestational age
Care for pregnant women and their infants at extremely low gestational ages challenges clinical teams. The continuing rise in survival at gestational ages below 25 weeks has prompted re-evaluation of practice guidelines within the UK and other countries. This paper describes the background data that have guided our practice, the approach that has been taken to deliver optimal outcomes for pregnancies delivering at extremely low gestational age in the UK, mainly through centralising care, and discusses the research and audit data that support our practice. In particular, we emphasize the importance of a coordinated perinatal approach to both mother and infant, and careful assessment of the risks to both, to ensure that we develop the highest quality personalized care for each family, supported by national quality improvement and research evidence
Lensing galaxies: light or dark?
In a recent paper, Hawkins (1997) argues on the basis of statistical studies
of double-image gravitational lenses and lens candidates that a large
population of dark lenses exists and that these outnumber galaxies with more
normal mass-to-light ratios by a factor of 3:1. If correct, this is a very
important result for many areas of astronomy including galaxy formation and
cosmology. In this paper we discuss our new radio-selected gravitational lens
sample, JVAS/CLASS, in order to test and constrain this proposition. We have
obtained ground-based and HST images of all multiple-image lens systems in our
sample and in 12 cases out of 12 we find the lensing galaxies in the optical
and/or near infrared. Our success in finding lensing galaxies creates problems
for the dark lens hypothesis. If it is to survive, ad hoc modifications seem to
be necessary: only very massive galaxies (more than about one trillion solar
masses) can be dark, and the cutoff in mass must be sharp. Our finding of lens
galaxies in all the JVAS/CLASS systems is complementary evidence which supports
the conclusion of Kochanek et al. (1997) that many of the wide-separation
optically-selected pairs are physically distinct quasars rather than
